I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS

Teacher Instructions

Step 1. Before class prepare a handout and a transparency.

Step 2. Before beginning the activity, have students use the names of different locations to guess how the region's physical environment looks: If you were standing in each of these places, what might you see? What might the weather be like? etc. Use the “future of probability” in your questions, and elicit this form in their responses.

Step 3. Place students into pairs and distribute an activity sheet to each pair.

Step 4. Allow students to perform Paso 1 and 2.

Materials

Physical and political maps of the Basque Country

Access tourist information on websites like http:// www.paisvascoturismo.net/ and http://www.red2000.com/spain/region/1r-vasc.html, which has a plethora of practical information. Both of these sites have versions in English and Spanish; direct your students to use the Spanish versions for their research.

Suggestions

The five-day itinerary in Paso 2 can be an oral presentation or a written report.

Review the future tense and its two main uses: (1) narrative events in future time and (2) expressing probability in the present time frame.

Notes

Basque Country maps are from http://www.map-of-spain.co.uk. These copyright free maps are labeled in English, so you may want your students to search for Spanish-language maps in your library or on the Internet.

The places in the following list are not all in the Basque Country of Spain.  Alter the list to places your students will be familiar with, or have them research these places on the Internet.

II. STUDENT ACTIVITY HANDOUTS

Handout 1

You and a friend are planning a backpacking trip through Spain this summer. You have decided to spend five days in the Basque Country of Spain.  Discuss with your friend the details of your trip to el País Vasco, focusing on the following two areas:

Paso 1. Identify the items you will need to pack. Think about what the weather might be like, given the geography and climate of the region.

Lenguaje funcional

You can use the future tense in Spanish to express probability:

Hará frío en las montañas.
It’s probably cold in the mountains.

Lloverá mucho en el norte.
It probably rains a lot in the north.

Paso 2. Plan your itinerary for the five days in the region.  Describe each place you will visit and the activities you plan to do in each location. Indicate each day and the activities on a map of the Basque Country.

IV. FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES

Supply students with blank postcards on which they can write to a friend back home and describe their trip through the Basque Region.  Students can also illustrate the postcard with an image from the region.
