| Step 1. | Before class prepare a handout and a transparency. Divide students into groups of four. Assign each group a natural disaster by having them draw from the natural disaster slips placed in a bag. Have them choose an area of the world where this could occur; each group should verify aloud their area of the world to make sure that there are no duplications. Each group will design a plan of action for dealing with the disaster. This plan will include a poster with icons and steps, a pubic service announcement for prevention, places for people to go, ideas for rebuilding after the event, local resources, and some innovative ways to provide early warning. Each person in the group is to play an active role, sharing in the presentation of information. (Optional: You may also add that you will be scoring presentations during the simulation and that there will be an individual and a group grade to make sure that all the elements are there.) Make it clear that students are not to read their presentations. |
| Step 2. | Depending on the size of the class and number of groups, place three groups of three students into groups of 9. Each group of 3 will present to the other 6 people, taking turns. (There will be concurrent presentations going on in the room.) |
There are 15 disasters identified. If the class is smaller, select the ones that you want to develop for the projects. The teacher will be able to observe and score the simultaneous presentations, listening for the vital elements. If needed, have groups form into new groups of 9 and repeat their presentations to give you a chance to score them. Another way would be for you to invite language majors from a university or other teachers to view and score the presentations. The presentations could be video taped for viewing later.

Ustedes son parte de un grupo comunitario que quiere diseñar un plan de acción en el caso de un desastre natural. Van a ser las primeras personas que intervienen ante un evento natural. Por eso, van a desarrollar un plan de prevención y organización comunal. Van a identificar las amenazas, intentar reducirlas e informar al público de qué hacer antes, durante y después de que ocurra un fenómeno peligroso. También hay que identificar las alertas tempranas naturales.
En su proyecto, van a preparar una presentación de Educación Comunitaria con:
· Un póster con iconos e información detallada de lo que se hace en caso de un desastre natural
· Otros visuales, folletos, anuncios que dan más información o alerta temprana
· Un plan de preparación comunitaria
· Un plan familiar
· Un plan de acción comunitaria
