Portland Public Schools Chinese Flagship Program
The Portland Public Schools (PPS) Chinese Flagship Program is committed to
creating a sustainable, agile, and replicable model for K-12 Mandarin Chinese
education in the United States,
where we strive for all students to achieve high academic performance
and advanced proficiency as bilingual, bi-literate citizens with deep cultural awareness.The PPS Chinese Flagship Program is structured on a language learning
approach that includes content-based instruction, explicit language instruction, and experiential learning.

University of Oregon Chinese Flagship Program
If your goal is to develop the real-world linguistic and cultural skills to work in a Chinese professional environment, then the UO Chinese Flagship Program will serve you well. We encourage highly motivated Mandarin language learners from all backgrounds and experiences to apply. Once selected as UO Chinese Flagship Scholars, students enroll in a four-year, honors-level program. Students graduate with professional language skills and cross-cultural understanding, making them competitive for the job market or graduate school.

Japanese Global Scholars Program
CASLS, the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies, and the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures are collaborating to develop the Japanese Global Scholars Program. Our program pairs academic and linguistic training so that students can major in a field of their choice while learning the Japanese language and culture.
Students in the Global Scholars Program will:
- Learn Japanese language and experience the culture in an immersion setting
- Live in a language-learning dorm
- Enroll in regular courses at the University of Oregon, taught in English, along with discussion courses taught in Japanese
- Major in an academic field of their choice
- Study abroad at a university in Japan their junior year, enrolling in regular courses in their major with native-speaking peers
- Complete a senior thesis to showcase their academic, language, and cultural skills
- Graduate with professional-level Japanese skills, which makes them competitive for graduate school or employment
