Oregon Roadmap to Language Excellence

As educators, we want our students to succeed in college and in the job market. CASLS convened a forum of leaders in education, business, and government to determine the skills language learners need to become successful. Members of these sectors shared their perspectives and identified ways to work together to shape foreign language learning. The resulting action plan, known as the Oregon Roadmap to Language Excellence, proposes incentive-based initiatives to reward students who demonstrate proficiency and to support educational institutions helping students become proficient.

Specifically, the Roadmap calls for

  • Federal and state support for integrated K-16 international education programs
  • Scholarships for bilingual teachers in training
  • Credits for K-12 and college students demonstrating proficiency
  • School-to-work internships for students
