Japanese Cultural Experiences

Participating in Japanese culture can bring the language alive. CASLS and the Portland Shokookai created two separate programs to provide Portland-area students with an opportunity to appreciate the interplay between language and culture.

CASLS tailored Living Language Experience for students who have strong Japanese language skills. These students spend a day with professionals who work in Portland-area Japanese businesses. Those interested in participating should email us for more information.

Through Living Language Experience, students

  • Understand Japanese business environments
  • Experience cultural nuances
  • Explore career options
  • Use their Japanese in a professional setting

For students who are just beginning to study Japanese, CASLS created Hannichi Homestay. These students meet with Japanese families for a half day to participate in traditional activities such as cooking food, playing games, writing calligraphy, or folding origami.

Students in Hannichi Homestay

  • Develop appreciation for Japanese culture
  • Build new vocabulary
  • Connect with local Japanese families
