The Language Flagship is a national program designed to provide undergraduates with the academic, cultural, and linguistic tools needed to become global professionals. The UO is one of twenty-four Language Flagship programs across the country offering specialized programs in African languages, Arabic, Turkic, Hindi/Urdu, Korean, Mandarin, Persian, and Russian.

The Flagship curriculum offers rigorous language instruction, experiential learning opportunities, and intensive overseas study that prepare top scholar students for national level certification. We encourage highly-motivated Mandarin language learners from all backgrounds and experiences to apply to the UO Language Flagship Program.
Flagship Scholar Program
The University of Oregon’s Chinese Flagship program serves UO top scholars who wish to graduate with professional level Mandarin language skills. The curriculum offers rigorous language instruction, experiential learning opportunities, and intensive overseas study that prepare students for national level certification.
Flagship builds superior-level proficiency through content-based language instruction and intensive overseas study. Students commit to obtaining Superior-level Mandarin (ILR 3) proficiency and conferred national Language Flagship Chinese certification while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a major of their choice.

Admission / Eligibility / Scholarship:
Apply between December 1 - January 30.
To be eligible students must demonstrate entry-level Mandarin proficiency, submit a full application with essays, recommendations, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher. Applicants will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.
The application review committee will arrange for promising candidates to take online Chinese Computerized Assessment of Proficiency (CAP) and participate in an online Skype or phone interview.
On-campus and study abroad merit-based scholarships are awarded to highly qualified applicants. Students must be U.S. citizen’s or have U.S. permanent residency to be eligible.
Flagship-Bound
The UO Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (EALL) and the Flagship Program offers highly motivated underclassmen with intermediate level proficiency (CHN300 and CHN400) a Flagship-Bound program with individual language tutors and support to help students gain the requisite language proficiency for entry into the Flagship Scholar program.
Students interested in the Flagship-Bound program are encouraged to complete the open Flagship-Bound application and meet with the Flagship Academic Director.

Admission / Eligibility / Scholarship:
Interested student must complete the Flagship-Bound application and statement of intent to pursue advanced-level Mandarin. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in UO Chinese 300- 400 level language classes and have a cumulative UO GPA of 3.3 or higher. Applicants will be reviewed and awarded on an ongoing basis.
Participants receive a $100 (in-state) and $150 (out-of-state) scholarship per term; successful students eligible for larger scholarship.
Flagship-Bound admission does not guarantee admission into the UO or any other Language Flagship scholar programs. Students will be required to submit a formal application which demonstrates a requisite level of proficiency, academic excellence, and leadership potential.
