UO Chinese Language Flagship Course Proposals
To build a curriculum that educates and engages students with the knowledge and Mandarin skills needed to become global professionals, Flagship welcomes faculty course proposals from all disciplines to teach regular departmental course. Faculty course proposals are accepted and reviewed on an ongoing basis. Non-UO faculty must apply to the UO academic pool (reference number 090709).
Flagship provides students with proficiency level-appropriate curriculum. Students with advanced-level Mandarin are able to enroll in regular university trailer discussion section or full four-credit courses taught in Chinese by UO departmental faculty. Interested non-native Chinese speaking faculty are equally encouraged to submit a proposal and will given the option of having a graduate student conduct a major portion of the lecture. Students work in groups, with language partners, and with program tutors to support language learning challenges specific the academic field represented by each content course.
To meet the diverse academic interests of students, courses selection balances classes from the sciences, social science, and the humanities. Annually three-Trailer and three-full content courses are selected. Priority is given to current tenured or tenure track faculty and proposals with well-developed learning outcomes related to global professional skill building.
The 2009-10 content curriculum offerings include Psychology: Mind and Brains, Political Science: State of the World, English: Globalization in Chinese Film, History: Modern Chinese History, Leadership and Change: Policies effecting Chinese Cities, and Literature: Gender in Modern Chinese Literature. Classes are frequently videotaped in an effort to expand research, teaching, and learning opportunities. The content courses are supported by specially designed language strategies classes.
