CHN 399 Chinese Language Strategies
This unit will use a series of case studies to teach Chinese business communication. It will actively involve and challenge students as they improve their Mandarin Chinese language skills in a wide range of applied business context, from doing job interviews, to creating advertising and promotion plans, to issues on e-commerce and intellectual property rights. In addition to business vocabulary, students are expected to master the different levels of social formality and know exactly what to say in various business contexts.
CHN 380 Self and Society in Chinese Literature
This course examines the role of the self in pre-modern Chinese society through reading some of the most important works in traditional Chinese literature. A good knowledge and understanding of the relationship between the individual and the society in premodern China will prove essential for any serious engagement with modern China with its ever-increasing influence in regional and global affairs.
HIST 397 Modern Chinese History
This course, conducted completely in Mandarin Chinese, provides students with an overview of modern China. It guides students through the richness and complexity of modern Chinese history.Understanding modern China requires some preliminary familiarity with core cultural values and basic social structures of pre-modern China. This background sets the stage for a proper appreciation of China¡¯s dramatic modern transformations. Through a combination of lectures, films, and discussions, this course acquaints students with the warp and weft of Chinese history since the mid-nineteenth century. It demonstrates how Chinese intellectuals, reformers and revolutionaries attempted to modify, reject, even to eradicate some aspects of Chinese traditions while at the same time searching for a specifically Chinese identity and coming to terms with modernity in a Chinese way. It also deconstructs a monolithic image of ¡°China¡± by considering gender difference in experience of modernity and by looking at some minority peoples¡¯ perspectives of modern Chinese history, including those of muslims and Tibetans. Through intensive reading, writing, and discussing (all in Mandarin Chinese), students of this course will acquire foundational knowledge for a historical understanding of contemporary issues in Chinese politics and society.
