In the 2009-2010 academic year, the University of Oregon (UO) Chinese Flagship and the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (EALL) will be working to create a fully-articulated program that provides students with accelerated learning options and multiple entry points into Flagship. The honors-level Chinese Flagship program is designed for students with intermediate-mid to advanced Mandarin proficiency. The curriculum includes a mix of humanities, sciences, and social sciences courses aimed at engaging students in relevant and productive learning activities. Learning takes place through language and content courses, peer mentoring, an immersive language-living environment, academic colloquia, domain specific research, a Flagship Capstone year abroad, and career path internships. |
level 1 Intermediate-mid level Language Strategies course will introduce students to academic content in Chinese in preparation for articulating lower-level language classes. This approach will use the languages across the curriculum model surveying content in science, social science and humanities. level 2 Advanced-low to mid level students enroll in an established regular UO class taught in English and participate in a discussion section conducted in Chinese. Concurrently, students enroll in a loosely linked language class designed to give them discipline-specific language skills. level 3 At the core of the UO Chinese Flagship experience is the multi-disciplinary content courses taught by experts in their field. Content courses strengthen students¡¯ language base while helping them develop critical thinking and response skills for interactions in professional and academic Chinese environments.
