The University of Oregon’s Chinese Language Flagship Program offers Mandarin language students an honors-level program designed to help develop superior Chinese language skills while pursuing degrees in the majors of their choice. Student linguistic and academic knowledge is strengthened by regular undergraduate courses in social science, science, and the humanities and the correlate language strategy courses. Learning is reinforced through individual study with GTF, peer language partners, and discipline mentors.
All Chinese Flagship positions are posted accordingly through the Graduate School or the Career Center and require native or near-native proficiency in Mandarin Chinese. Peer Language Partners – posting ongoing (Career Center)
Undergraduate language partners meet one-on-one with students through the Chinese Flagship program for 1 to 2 hours per week. Partners are trained to help students build conversational language skills in Mandarin appropriate for social and academic settings. Peer partners are selected, trained, and supervised by the Chinese Flagship program and required to submit regular activity reports. Student worker position, $9.50/hour
Academic Discipline Mentors 俄勒冈大学中文领航项目 - 専門教师 – posting ongoing (Career Center)
Discipline mentors provide students preparing to study in China with academic reading and writing support related to their academic discipline. Discipline mentors meet one-on-one for 1-2 hours per week. Mentors are typically graduate students able to provide academic knowledge and student-centered skill building. This is an hourly, non-tuition support position. Applicants should not have a GTF appointment greater than .4 FTE that might conflict with the graduate schools policy around obtaining additional work hours. $11.00 /hour, commensurate with qualifications
Graduate Teaching Fellows (GTF) – posting ongoing (Graduate School)
The Chinese Flagship program and collaborating department hire three GTFs each term to assist the Flagship teaching team, serving as teaching assistants and language literacy coaches. GTFs must be enrolled in a UO graduate school program and have a degree in a related academic discipline (see Curriculum section or CHNF on the UO Class Schedule for current course listing). GTF positions are between .40-.49 FTE with tuition support and pay rates determined by GTFF Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Chinese Flagship Assistant (CFA) – fall posting (Career Center)
This residential program assistant provides community-building support activities for students living in the Chinese Flagship wing of the International House position. Hired jointly through UO Housing and the Chinese Flagship program, the CFA is unique among Housing FA and RA student staff. The CFA supports students academically and socially by connecting the classroom and residential experience. Highly-motivated, personable, and academically gifted, the CFA sets the tone for developing an immersive language-learning environment. Live in dorm, 10 hours weekly, full Housing room & board with full meal plan.
