Study Abroad

To help students acquire the academic, cultural, and linguistic tools required to become global leaders, The Language Flagship runs several China study abroad programs through the consortium of Chinese Flagship programs. Each experience is designed to immerse students into the culture and maximize training in students’academic area.

Summer Intensive
The Flagship Qingdao Center offers a two-month intensive language and culture training for Flagship students at the intermediate-mid through superior-level. Learning is a balance of in-class and experiential community-based activities. Interested UO students apply through the UO Flagship office early in the winter term.

Flagship Capstone Year Abroad
Flagship students with the appropriate prerequisites, spend a year in China through The Language Flagship capstone program. Designed for students with advanced level Mandarin, this capstone year combines academic and practical hands-on learning through volunteer and internship experiences.

Nanjing University
Students spend a semester studying at Nanjing University, one of China’s elite public universities. Learning side-by-side with peers; taking courses in subjects that match their interests and academic major. As a comprehensive university, Nanjing is well-positioned to deliver a high-quality academic experience to students of all majors.

The Nanjing Flagship office helps students adjust to the distinctly Chinese academic experience, learning culture, and student life. The Flagship office helps students negotiate housing, enroll in courses, as well as provides for academic and experiential learning opportunities.

Features of the Flagship Nanjing University Program:

Direct enroll in courses related to major and specific interests
Live with a Nanjing roommate/tutor from within academic field
Engage the culture through organized travel, service and volunteer projects

Student Internship
The Flagship Qingdao Center works individually with students to arrange internships that fit their profile and professional goals. Designed as an educational program, the overseas internship experience is fundamental for developing global professional skills. Students develop personal understanding of work life in China, learn and practice how to establish themselves, and work productively in a Chinese workplace.

Participants are expected to participate fully in the work and life of the organizations in which they are placed and complete UO documentation for internship credit.

Features of the Flagship Internship:

Qingdao Flagship Center helps qualified students find full-time internships in a Chinese work environment
Placement involves student academic and career goals, available positions, and a successful interview
Training prepares students for how to arrange housing, negotiate the Chinese work place, and develop professional relationships
Students immerse themselves in the work culture, gaining invaluable insight
Having documented the experience, students receive full college credit through the UO Study Abroad office
