Summer Reading List
Reading is critical to the academic learning experience. Students are encouraged to read beyond the classroom in the summer reading program. Reading contemporary, modern, and classical works help to put into perspective our current life experiences; fears, hopes, and the quest for happiness. Reading them in Chinese will deepen your bi-cultural understanding of the peoples of greater China and Chinese Diaspora as well as your own beliefs.
2009 Summer Reading
As Flagship scholars and aspiring future leaders, the knowledge and experienced gained through reading is invaluable. Although there are many wonderful and insightful books we have selected just two as required for fall 2009 - A Free Life by Ha Jin and 《活着》(To Live) by 余华 (Yu Hua). Students will be given writing assignments in the fall term based on their class level.
- To Live 《活着》, 余华
-地主少爷富贵嗜赌成性,终于赌光了家业一贫如洗,穷困之中富贵的富贵因为母亲生病前去求医,没想到半路上被国民党部队抓了壮丁,后被解放军所俘虏,回到家乡他才知道母亲已经去世,妻子家珍含辛茹苦带大了一双儿女,但女儿不幸变成了聋哑人,儿子机灵活泼。然而,真正的悲剧从此才开始渐次上演… …
- A Free Life
- Ha Jin’s most personal novel, though not exactly autobiographical—confronts the taboo head on. This meandering yet deeply affecting novel is at once a version of the classic saga of an immigrant family adjusting to life in the United States and a highly unconventional portrait of the artist as an immigrant, family man, and all-around ordinary guy. by Ruth Franklin, Slate/Bing.com
Reading Assignments by Course Level:
A Free Life - all students at all levels are asked to read the book and be prepared to present and discuss the autobiographical experience during fall orientation.
To Live
Level 1 (CHN 420 Intermediate-mid Language Strategies)
You are asked to read excerpts of To Live and view the movie version on line. Your first writing assigned will be a reflective essay based on the movie (at least 500 characters).
Level 2 (CHN 440 Advanced-low Language Strategies)
You will read To Live and submit a reflective 1000 character essay (draft) the first week of fall term.
Level 3 and Studying Abroad Flagship students
You will be expected to write a 1000 character essay comparing the movie to the book. Students studying in China can submit the writing as part of a fall term regular bi-weekly journal entry to the UO Flagship instructors.

Summer readings help to maintain and improve reading proficiency, increase fluency and vocabulary skills, and enhance the academic experience. As Flagship scholars we encourage you to read to learn, love, and explore the world depicted in contemporary, modern, and classical perspectives. This will further help you develop a deeper bi-cultural understanding of the peoples of greater China (and Chinese around the world) and America.
As you explore new authors, poets, and genre your readings will be become part of your portfolio of knowledge and add to yours and our Flagship library. Below are some of OUR favorite books by Chinese and American authors. Many of the books have also been adapted into movies. Please help us add to the list by sharing with us books and authors that have influenced you. Again, the books are often readily available on online reading sites such as www.shuku.net, www.tianyabook.com, http://book.lystudy.com, www.mwjx.com, http://book.sina.com.cn, or http://book.sina.com.cn, videos on tudou.com
