WILL 2004 Leadership Projects

State organizations and conferences - sustaining, forming, organizing, revitalizing

Brenda Fisher and Cheryl Rudd (WA, fisherb@evsd.org, crudd@colsd.org)
Successfully chair the Washington Association For Language Teaching 2005 Fall Conference in Spokane, increase conference attendance and draw quality presenters.

Pam Johnson and Kerri Hiatt
(MT, panchitajohnson@yahoo.com, khiatt@beltschool.com)
Encourage the Montana Association of Language Teachers to advocate for inclusion of world languages in the state legislature’s legal definition of what constitutes a "basic education" in Montana.

Jennifer Mayfield (AK, mayfield_Jennifer@asdk12.org)
Establish an Alaskan chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese or create an informal organization to help Spanish teachers in my district connect and communicate with each other.

Kacey Pfaff (ID, kaceypfaff@yahoo.com)
Gain a better understanding of association roles and expectations as president of the Idaho Association of Spanish Teachers. I hope to set up some regional idea shares, increase the use of list-serve, and provide information to all Idaho Spanish teachers to encourage future involvement in state organization.

George Shimer (OR, geshimer@nyssa.k12.or.us)
Develop an alliance of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish with teachers in Eastern Oregon and Western Idaho.

Richard Winegar (ID, rwinegar@emmettschools.org)
Use my role as webmaster of Idaho Association of Teachers of Language and Culture to increase the professional sharing and communication within the state of Idaho. This will be accomplished through active promotion and facilitation of the website and listserv.

Extend range of language offerings in school or district, program development

Geraldine Felix McDonald (MT, gfelix@mission.blackfoot.net)
Cover the gap between immersion and H.S. by offering a continuing Salish program for all levels, including the middle school level, because our native language is dying and I would like to be an advocate for bringing our native language back.

Lynette Pottenger (MT, Lynette.Pottenger@fortbenton.k12.MT.us)
Develop a K-6 Spanish program.

Nancy Heim (ID, nhei@sd41.k12.id.us)
Maintain our K-2 Spanish program: For the past 15 years, we have had a very small K - 2nd grade Spanish opportunity provided by a fantastic volunteer. She is now 84. I don’t want the program to die. There is support and enthusiasm on the part of the staff and the students. I want to try to get the elementary school to use a K-2 program like "Salsa" or "Hola Hola" to keep the program going.

Anne Graham (MT, annejon9@juno.com)
Have K-12 foreign language classes throughout Montana; however, my project is focused on program development rather than the mandate at the state level. My project is to serve as a mentor to Lynnette as she begins a K-6 Spanish program, aligning my program with the high school Spanish teachers and refining my curriculum so it can serve as a model for new K-8 programs.

Cecilia Casillas-Rentsch (OR, ceciliarentsch@yahoo.com)
Establish a K-12 Spanish program. My high school has a strong foreign language program and one of our elementary schools is starting an immersion kindergarten program, so I would like to have the opportunity to develop a continuous program for K-12.

Organize World Language and Culture events to promote interest and enrollment

C. Paul Brizzee (ID, cpbrizzee@atcnet.net)
Plan and coordinate a language week at the school involving especially the language teachers and students, but also the other school staff members as well as booster club and other community members (school board members, administrators, teachers, lunch room personnel, parents, booster club, foreign language speakers from the community).

Setsuko Burch (WA, setsukob@cksd.wednet.edu)
Communicate with the Japanese, Spanish and French teachers to plan a "World Language Week" at the building level to promote world language learning.

Lori Albright (OR, Lori_Albright@pendleton.k12.or.us)
Work with Lane ESD and Blue Mountain Community College on annual arts and culture day for high school students in Umatilla and Monon counties.

Integrate world languages and service learning

Ryan Beardall (WY, rbeardall@park6.k12.wy.us)
Plan and do service learning projects with my students in order to immerse them in the language, help the community, strengthen my program and strengthen relationships with students and parents.

Michelle McCoy (OR, michelle_mccoy@lincoln.k12.or.us)
Create and implement a peer tutoring/mentoring program, using grant money that I have already received, that will involve mid-level ability ESL students. These ESL students would be matched up with native English speakers in their mainstream classes during the school day to help the ESL students with daily assignments, etc.

Nora Hallett (WA, nhallett@nthurston.k12.wa.us)
Work to receive administrative approval to integrate the Senior Project graduation requirement into upper level language courses, e.g. German III/IV. This means students would have permission to waive the .5 credit requirement by meeting all the course requirements within the framework of the language class and language credits "Culture" standard: integrate the "culture" national standard into my curriculum units.

Mentoring

Maya Brachmann (OR, mbrachma@lane.k12.or.us)
Mentor a pre-service and a novice teacher in their process toward becoming professional educators.

Dionne Hasforth (OR, dhasforth1@msn.com)
Develop and facilitate a teacher study group to collaborate with the teachers in my district. The focus of the group will be to improve proficiency in the communicative standards-based FL classroom.

Brandee Mau (WY, bmau@ccsd.k12.wy.us)
Develop a statewide teacher study group focusing ultimately on increasing student proficiency through professional collaboration and instruction in a standards-based classroom.

Assessment

Bart Black (ID, bblack@allidaho.com)
Coordinate with the foreign language department to develop and implement an oral proficiency assessment for our school and district based on the OPI.
