I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS

Teacher Instructions

  1. Before class prepare the handout and the transparency.
  2. Introduce the unit by using the baseball illustrations on Transparency 1 and the script below. Use clippings from magazines or bring baseball items if available.
  3. Distribute the handout and have the students do the activity in pairs.
  4. Prepare for "Who Knows Best?" game on Transparency 2 by writing "true ほんと" at one end of the blackboard and "false うそ" at the other end to divide the classroom into two sections. Show the instructions to the students.
  5. Uncover the first sentence and ask a student to read it. Have the students move to one section based on their answer choice.
  6. Show the answer. Ask the students who answered incorrectly to go back to their seat.
  7. Repeat this process (#5 and 6) until the last statement has been read. Announce the winner(s).

Game: Who Knows Best?

  1. Your teacher will show a sentence and have a student read it.
  2. Move to "true ほんと" section if you think the statement is true and "falseうそ" section if you think it's false.
  3. Your teacher will show the answer. If you answered incorrectly, go back to your seat. If you answered correctly, remain to challenge the next question.  
  4. The student who remains in the competition the longest will win the game.

1)  野球はオリンピックのゲームです。
True, baseball became a full medal sport in 1992.

2)  野球はバットとグローブとボールを使います。
True, the game of baseball uses bat, gloves and a ball.

3)  野球はチームでするスポーツです。
True, baseball is a team sport.

4)  野球は１８４５年にイギリスではじまりました。
False, baseball was started in the U.S. In 1845, Alexander Cartwright wrote a set of rules for baseball, which became dominant, formalizing the game. The Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of the New York City was one of the first professional gentlemen's clubs to play baseball under these rules.

IV. FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES

Students form pairs or small groups. Have students make their own baseball true or false questions and write them down. Students then take turns asking and answering the questions.
