I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS

Purpose of This Lesson

Students will learn about the KFC’s founder, Colonel Sanders, and the history of his mannequin standing during the entrance of almost all the KFC restaurants in Japan . Students will also learn about how Japanese people began having an association of KFC with Christmas.

Teacher Instructions

  1. Before class, prepare the handout and transparency.

  2. Ask students questions about KFC using Script 1. Use Transparency 1 for the first question about images of KFC in the US . This is a pre-reading activity for the following reading.

  3. Distribute Handout 1 and have students read the passage once. Tell students to try to get the gist of it without worrying too much about detail for the first reading.

  4. Have students form pairs and distribute Handout 2. Explain the activity using Transparency 3. Have students work on activities 1 and 2 in pairs.

  5. Discuss the answers for activities 1 and 2 with the whole class using Transparency 2 and 3. Add extra information if necessary. (See Answer Keys)

  6. Have students form groups of four and work on Activity 3 from Handout 2.

  7. Have each group report and discuss with the entire class. (Note: The topic of the next section in this unit is sushi.)

Handout 1

カーネルサンダースはサンタクロース?

A  KFCはケンタッキー州1にあった小さな食堂2「サンダース・カフェ」に始まります。オーナーのカーネル・サンダースは客をとても大切にし、おいしい料理を出すためにいつも努力3をしていました。そして、1940年にフライドチキンのオリジナル・レシピを完成させ4、カーネル・サンダースのチキンはとてもやわらかくておいしいととても有名になりました。今の「ケンタッキーフライドチキン」という名前は1952年につけられました。

B  日本には1970年に一号店5ができました。しかし、日本人は鳥肉を手で食べるということに慣れていなかった1ので、最初7はあまり客が来ませんでした。そこで、日本のKFCは、人々にアピールするために、お店の入口にカーネル・サンダースのマネキンを置く8ことにしました。このアイデアは、カナダを訪れた9日本のKFCの社員10が、キャンペーンのために作られたマネキンを見つけた時に生まれました。このマネキンは、その後使われていなかったので、その社員が日本に持って帰ったのです。今では、日本のほとんどのKFCのお店の前にカーネル・サンダースのマネキンが立っています。

C  このマネキンは、カーネルが60才の時のもので、体の大きさもほとんど同じです。服は、マネキンもカーネルがいつも着ていた白いスーツを着ていますが、イベントがある時には服も変わります。クリスマスには、日本のすべてのKFCのマネキンがサンタクロースの服を着ます。また、お店によって、夏はゆかた、野球11のシーズンには野球のユニフォームを着せるなど、いろいろ工夫しています12。このように、このマネキンは「カーネルおじさん」としてみんなに愛されています。

D  このマネキンのほかにも、日本のKFCが1974年に始めて大成功13した戦略14があります。これは「クリスマスにはケンタッキー」というイメージを作り上げることでした。このアイデアは、ある外国人の「日本では七面鳥15が買えないのでチキンを買いに来た」という言葉16をヒントに生まれました。1974年からは、毎年クリスマスキャンペーンをしています。このため、日本人の間に、「クリスマスにチキンを食べる」というふしぎな習慣17ができました。1940年にオリジナルチキンを作り出したカーネル・サンダースも、日本人がクリスマスに食べるようになるとは夢18にも思わなかったことでしょう。
