I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS

Purpose of This Lesson

Students will learn the basic step of creating Haikus themselves.

Teacher Instructions

  1. Before class, prepare the Handout and Transparency.

  2. Distribute Handout and have the students form pairs.

  3. Have the students read activity 1 in pairs.

  4. Review activity 1 using Transparency.

  5. Have the students do activity 2 individually.

  6. Have the students read their Haiku aloud in class or in small groups.

Notes

The method of teaching haiku, particularly choosing nouns to frame the Haiku, is taken from the website「俳句入門レッスン」. When a student has progressed somewhat in learning to write Haiku themselves, they may reduce the number of nouns that they use to frame the Haiku at the beginning.

II. STUDENT ACTIVITY HANDOUTS

1. 俳句を作ってみましょう。

1)    イメージを浮かべて、言葉を二つ選びます。五文字でなくてもいいです。好きなもの名前、人の名前、地名でもいいです。
Create an image in your head and choose two words (nouns) you associate with it. You may also choose the proper nouns of people or places.

2)    季語を一つ選びます。(季語=season word)Choose one season word.

3)    三つの名詞の前や後ろに動詞や形容詞や助詞を加えて、五拍、七拍、五拍の順にならべます。十七拍にたりなくなってしまっても、多くなってしまってもかまいせん。
Add verbs, adjectives, or adverbs, either before or after the three words from question #1. Line the words in order of five, seven, and five haku.

2. 俳句を作ってみましょう。Create your own Haiku.

1)    イメージに浮かぶ言葉を二つを選びます。人の名前や地名でもいいです。
Create an image in your head and choose two words  you associate with it.  You may also choose the names of people or places.

2)    季節の言葉を一つ選びます。Choose one season word.

3)    他の言葉(動詞、形容詞、助詞)を付けて、五拍、七拍、五拍の順にならべます。言葉はすこし多くなっても少なくなってもいいです。
(Add verbs, adjectives, adverbs, or particles either before or after the three words from question #1. Line the words in order of five, seven, and five haku. The total number of haku could be a little less or a little over seventeen. )

4)    「五・七・五」と季語のルールを守って、俳句をどんどんつくってみよう。
Create your own Haiku, keeping in mind the 5-7-5 haku and the usage of season words.
