I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS

Purpose of This Lesson

Students will learn about Haiga, a combination of a Haiku and a picture, and then create Haiga as a final project.

Teacher Instructions

  1. Before class, prepare the Handout and Transparency.

  2. Show the students an example of Haiga and discuss it. Use Script. Locate more Haiga by visiting the websites below and show students more examples of Haiga.

  3. Distribute Handout and have the students form pairs.

  4. Have the students do activity 1 in pairs.

  5. Check their answers using Transparency.

  6. Using the websites listed in the activity below, show the students Haiga samples.

  7. Have the students make their own Haiga. If the students have computer access, have them visit the sites listed in the activity to view more samples. Students should finish the activity as homework.

  8. Have students present their Haiga to the class. Put students’ Haiga on the wall and have students evaluate each other. Have students vote for the best Haiga.

  9. Assess students’ Haiga using Scoring Guide.

Notes

“Haiga” is usually drawn to accompany brief written comments. It should be simple and easy for anyone to understand. Haiga often is accompanied by a Haiku.
