I.  BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS

Teacher Instructions

  1. Before class prepare the handout and the transparencies. Prepare materials for Transparency 1 and 2 as instructed in the Visual Aids for Teachers section below.

  2. Show Transparency 1 and ask students questions referring to Teacher Presentation Sample Scripts below. 

  3. Distribute the handout and have the students do Activity 1. Review their answers.

  4. Have the students do Activity 2. Review their answers.

  5. Show each comic strip on Transparency 2 and ask the students to identify which genre the comic belongs in.

日本の漫画を読んだり、アニメを見たりしたことがありますか。最近、日本のコミックやアニメは世界のいろいろなところで手に入る1ようになりました。

でも、日本の漫画やアニメがあなたの国のものと少し違う2ことに気がつき3ましたか。まず、日本の漫画はいろいろな年齢4の人のために作られています。子供5向き6のかわいいものから少年7、少女8、大人9が読めるものまであります。それに、題材10もたくさんあります。コメディー、スポーツ、サイエンス・フィクション、恋愛11、冒険12などです。また、歴史13や政治14の勉強ができる漫画もあります。漫画やアニメのキャラクターが商品15や広告16に使われることも多いです。

Transparency 2

Collect comic strips for different subject matters (e.g., humor, politics, romance, action, science fiction, history) and create a transparency of them.  

IV. FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES

Have the students bring one of their favorite manga or anime to the class and talk about it. In their presentation, have them include: 1. Which age group the manga or anime targets, 2. What kind of subject matter it deals with and 3. Why they like it.
