I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS

Instructions

  1. Before class prepare the handouts and the transparency.

  2. Distribute Handout 1. Show the video demonstrating emaki and have the students do Activity 1.

  3. Distribute Handout 1 and have the students do 1) in Activity 1 in pairs. Review their answers.

  4. Have the students do 2) and 3) in pairs. Review their answers.

  5. Distribute Handout 2 and have the students do Activity 2. Review their answers.

  6. Explain "Bandainagon emaki" by referring to the Resource section and using the language appropriate to your students level.

「伴大納言絵巻」

およそ300年前の事件である、宮中応天文門の火災(856年発生)にまつわる、当時の貴族たちのスキャンダラスな事件を描いたもの。

話のあらすじ:大納言伴善男(とものよしお)が応天門を炎上させ、その犯人として政敵である、左大臣源信(みなもとのまこと)を訴えるが、やがて些細なことから伴大納言の陰謀が明らかとなり、逆に流罪に処せられる。

第一巻応天門の火災の場面では、市中から朱雀門を通り抜けて火事見物にやってくる野次馬たちの様子がコミカルに描かれ、応天門の反対側には宮中から出てきた官人たちが不安げに火事を見上げています。動作や表情が誇張されて描写されている庶民に対して、貴族はもの静かに描写されているのも特徴。

IV. FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES

Show the students the Choojuu-giga picture scroll at http://akituya.gooside.com/choujyu_allall.htm and have them "read" it. For each picture, ask them to tell what's happening.

Picture scrolls show expressions and techniques that are used in the contemporary manga and anime, such as comical expressions, exaggerated imagery, and the use of bird's eye view as seen in this sample from "Bandainagon emaki." Have the students recognize these traits by comparing picture scrolls and manga/anime.
