I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS

Purpose of This Lesson

Students will interview an older person about an item and compare how it was treated in the past versus now. Based on the interview, they will make a poster encouraging people to recycle.

Teacher Instructions

  1. Before class, prepare the handout and transparency.

  2. Brainstorm with the class about items that we use today but probably did not exist in the same form earlier, such as aluminum soda cans, disposable diapers, or frozen food. Write them down on the chalkboard.

  3. Show Transparency 1 and explain the activities and homework. Distribute Handout 1.

  4. [ Homework ] Students will interview an older person and ask questions according to the instruction on the handout. They will fill in the table and bring it to the next class.

  5. Have students form groups of three. Have them share their findings and discuss what kind of differences they could find in terms of waste and its quantity. What could be done to reduce waste? Have them determine if any lessons can be drawn from the past.

  6. Have each group share the summary of their discussion in class.

  7. Based on the activity and discussion, have each student make a poster. Explain that they should include information about differences between past and modern lives, and that it should encourage others to learn form the past.

  8. Before students’ presentation, explain the writing task using Transparency 2. Assign every student to a presentation by another student for an essay assignment afterwards.

  9. Have students present the posters in class and then display them in the classroom if possible.

  10. Have students write an essay based on their assigned presentation. Collect them and give students feedback later.

II. STUDENT ACTIVITY HANDOUTS

Handout 1

1. Choose one item which we use today that existed in a different form in the past but performed a similar function, such as an aluminum soda can, a disposable diaper, or frozen food. Interview your grandparents or other elderly people and ask about the item you have chosen; (a) How was the item different? (b) How did they obtain it and how often was it replaced? (c) What did they do with the product after they finished using it? After the interview, fill in the first row of the table below. Then, in the second row of the table, write about the item at present times.
