In This Lesson

This second lesson in the series provides the same information introduced in the previous lesson with a reading activity. It is designed to teach students new vocabulary and content step by step.

徳川幕府と大名

徳川家康（とくがわいえやす）は、１７世紀の初めに関ヶ原の戦い1に勝って2、日本を統一しました3。家康は将軍になって、江戸に幕府4を開きました5。徳川幕府は全国6の四分の一7の土地8を支配しました9。残り10の土地は大名11を三つのランクに分けて12配置しました13。親藩（しんぱん）は徳川家の人たちです。譜代（ふだい）大名は関ヶ原の戦いの前からの味方14で、幕府が信頼していた1大名です。外様（とざま）大名は関ヶ原の戦いの後で、徳川の味方になった大名で、幕府はあまり信頼していませんでした。

III. FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES

Have students create a blank chronology table of Japanese and U.S. history for their own use. Create a large one on a construction paper for the whole class and place it on the wall. Have the students fill out the table as they finish each section in the unit and learn about new historical events.
