I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS

In This Lesson

The focus of this last lesson in the series is to have the students understand the ambivalent feeling the Japanese had toward the West upon the arrival of Perry. 

Teacher Instructions

  1. Before class prepare the handout and the transparency.

  2. Show the top two pictures of Perry to the students. Then, show the next illustration of Perry drawn by a Japanese.

  3. Distribute the handout and have the students do Activity 1 and 2. Review the answers.

  4. Have the students do Activity 3 in groups of three.

  5. Have the students share what they have discussed with the whole class.

Assessment Ideas

In groups, have the students make a skit illustrating the time between the seclusion policy and the arrival of Perry. Each student plays a different role such as a Shogun, a Dutch person, a foreigner trying to enter Japan, Perry, a samurai, an ordinary person, etc.

Have each group submit a script. Make corrections and give suggestions and return it to the group. Have the students revise the script and submit the final script. Have the students memorize their lines and act them out in front of the class. Evaluate the students based on their final script and their acting performance.
