I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS

Teacher Instructions         

  1. Before class prepare a handout and transparency.

  2. Prepare a set of kanji cards and categorization table for each group (Transparency 3). Cut the kanji cards into pieces so that students can place them onto the table. Prepare a transparency version of the kanji cards and categorization table to be used for checking answers. 

  3. Show the map of Gokaido in Activity 1 and review Gokaido.

  4. Introduce Tokaido by referring to Script 1.

  5. Show the image of shukuba on Transparency 2 and introduce the fifty-three post stations by referring to Script 2.

  6. Have the students form groups of three. Distribute the handout to each individual student,and a set of kanji cards and a categorization table to each group. Have the students work on Activities 1 and 2 in groups.

  7. Using the transparency have one group share their answer to question 1. Check their answer with the class.

  8. Check the answer for question 2.

  9. Have the students work on questions 3 and 4.
