I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS

Teacher Instructions

Step 1. Distribute the Handout 1 Los códigos dietarios: Tabúes y prácticas, to each student.

Step 2. Explain to the students that there are religious food practices that follow strict codes among different religious groups. On an overhead transparency list the religious groups that are included in the table and invite students to add other religions that also practice food taboos and practices. Have the students add the new column and/or line to their charts to include these additions.

Step 3. Place the students in pairs to fill out Handout 1. They should also write on the back of the paper any information they have to support their opinions.

Step 4. For any missing information, have students write out complete questions, both yes/no and with question words (¿Qué?, ¿Cómo?, etc.)

Notes

This is a pre-view activity; do not give students the answers to this activity until after they complete the activity “La comida y la religión (3)”.  The questions they generate in Step 4 will serve as advance organizers for the next activity.
