Paso 1. Read the following email exchange between Kate, an American from Portland, Oregon, and Pedro, a Mexican from Capula, Morelia. As you read, take notes on the categories of information in the table below.

Dear Pedro,

Hi, my name's Kate.  I live in Portland, the biggest city in Oregon.  My family lives in a house not too far from the Willamette River, and from my bedroom window, I can see the skyscrapers of downtown and one of the major highways of our city.  I like looking out my window, because Portland is pretty.  I especially like the view in the summer time, when there is a lot of sunshine, the weather is hot, and the flowers are blooming.  My room is next to my brother's room. Every week we both have to do chores to help around the house.  I have to clean the bathroom, feed our cat, and help with the dishes.  For dinner, we usually eat salad, potatoes, and some kind of meat, but my favorite food is pasta alfredo.  When I'm finished with my chores, I like to hang out with my friends at the mall or go to this great café just a few blocks from my house.  My friends and I usually go there every Friday night, because they have live music.  The thing I like about living in Portland is that there are always fun things to do with my friends and my family.  We even have a professional basketball team that is really fun to go watch.  The thing I don't like about living in Portland is that sometimes there is a lot of traffic, and it takes a long time to get anywhere around rush hour.  My parents both work downtown.  My mom is a lawyer and my dad owns a small bookstore.  They're pretty cool.  My ancestors were from England and Germany and their life was similar to mine because they lived in big cities in Europe.  They came to Oregon in 1850 because there was free land here.  I'm a junior at Grant High School.  My school is big, and so are my classes.  There are lots of clubs and sports, though, so there are a lot of things to be involved in outside of just classes.  When I graduate, I hope to go to college somewhere in Oregon and study music education, so I can be a music teacher.

Querida Kate,

Hola, me llamo Pedro.  Soy de México y vivo en un pueblo pequeño en las afueras de Morelia, en el estado de Michoacán.  Mi pueblo se llama Capula.  Alrededor de mi casa hay muchos campos de trigo, porque vivo en una región agrícola.  Vivo con mi familia;  somos seis personas—mi mamá, mi papá, mis dos hermanas, mi hermanito y yo.  Mi hermanito y yo compartimos un cuarto.  Desde nuestra ventana, se pueden ver los campos y otras casas. 

Mis quehaceres semanales son de ayudar a mi papá con el trabajo en los campos, y de cuidar a las gallinas que tenemos al lado de la casa.  A veces tengo que poner la mesa para el almuerzo, también.  Para nosotros, el almuerzo es la comida más grande, y normalmente comemos una sopa de verduras, frijoles, arroz y pollo o carne.  Mi plato favorito son los tamales, pero mi mamá solamente los hace para fiestas especiales. 

Para divertirme con mis amigos, normalmente voy a la plaza de nuestro pueblo a eso de las siete de la tarde para caminar y echar cuentos.  Tengo un amigo que tiene algunos videojuegos, así que a veces vamos a su casa los fines de semana para jugar.  Lo que me gusta de vivir en Capula es que conozco a todos en mi pueblo, y la vida aquí es tranquila.  Sobre todo, me gusta la época de lluvias, porque todo se pone muy verde y bonito.  Lo que no me gusta es que a veces tengo mucho trabajo para mis quehaceres, y no tengo mucho tiempo para estar con mis amigos.

Mi papá es granjero y mi mamá es ama de casa, pero los vecinos también piden que ella les haga tamales para fiestas, como es conocida como muy buena cocinera en mi pueblo.  Mis antepasados eran de esta misma región de Michoacán, cerca del Lago de Pátzcuaro, y su estilo de vida era parecido al mío, porque eran granjeros también.  Para mi escuela, voy a una secundaria en Morelia porque sólo tenemos una escuela primaria en mi pueblo.  Me gusta ir a Morelia para conocer a más personas.  Cuando me gradúe de la escuela secundaria, espero solicitar cupo en el Insituto Tecnológico de Morelia.  Quiero estudiar arquitectura y tienen un muy buen programa allí.

Paso 2. Answer these questions with a classmate. 

1. ¿Tu experiencia personal se parece más a la de Kate o la de Pedro? ¿Qué tienes en común con cada persona, y qué es diferente?

2. ¿Quién tiene la vida más urbana, y quién tiene una vida rural? Apunta otras diferencias entre la vida urbana y la rural que no se mencionan en los emails. Para sacar más ideas, piensa en la rutina diaria de una persona que vive en la ciudad y otra que vive en el campo.

3. ¿Qué estilo de vida te gusta más? ¿Por qué?

Can you recognize any of these factors in the messages from Kate and Pedro? List specific details from each person’s letter that correspond to these factors. If no aspects are mentioned for a category, write “no hay información”.

III. FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES

1. Have students devise questions for Pedro and Kate about other aspects of their surroundings or other things that interest them.

2. Have students complete the sentences in Pedro’s section with their own personal information, in Spanish.  Review the necessary vocabulary before they begin.
