Students can research additional information on Basque immigration on the web, e.g. details on the trip from Spain to the U.S. at http://www.eeny.org/news.php?id=104999.
This final activity can also be implemented as an oral assessment. Student A is the reporter for a local television show that produces a weekly feature about local history. Student B is a local resident whose great-grandfather immigrated from the Basque Country in Spain to Oregon in 1900. Student A will describe the geography of the Basque Country and explain the conditions in Spain that prompted many individuals to leave their country. Student B will describe the travel experience of his/her grandfather and what his life was like once he arrived in Oregon.
Pre-writing activity: Instead of providing the list of questions in the Activity section, have students brainstorm the questions, in Spanish. Include question formation in your scoring rubric. Then you can provide any missing topics after they have produced their lists of questions.
Handout 1
UN HOGAR NUEVO
(Writing a letter home)
It’s 100 years ago. You are a 17-year-old Basque who recently moved from your home in the Pyrenees Mountains to Jordan Valley, Oregon. Write a letter back to a friend in Spain describing what the past two months have been like for you. Use the following questions to help organize the content of your letter.
